Introduction

Hello, dear readers, and welcome to National November Writing Month 2012

I'm your author, John, and I hope it is my great pleasure to welcome you to this blog and this novel. Whether or not it actually turns out to be my great pleasure depends, I suppose, on the quality of my writing.

A couple notes, then, before you start reading:

First, in order to complete NaNoWriMo, you must write a 50,000 word novel in a month. I'm a working man with a fairly active social life, so while I think I can complete it, I'm going to make no guarantee in terms of quality. I usually write slowly and carefully; in order to finish, I'm going to write quickly and with abandon. To quote Heinlein, the food may not be fancy, but I hope that I can make sure it is hot and on time.

Second, the blog has a fairly simple layout. I'm not going to take the time to improve it, because I could use that time for writing. Note that the first posts will also be the latest chapters. If you were to read the blog in the normal way, you would be reading the story in reverse.

Third, this is the first time I've ever attempted anything like this, and the first time I've really given my writing to people in a public way. If you like it and have suggestions, I would love to hear them in comments. If you hate it and have suggestions, I would love to hear them in comments.

Fourth, don't be too alarmed by the title. Those who recognize the quote should know that it's not representative of emotional pathos. Based on my limited understanding of the story, it should do a good job to summarize some of the themes of the book. Those themes will probably change and develop as I understand what exactly is going on with the story.

Fifth, if I am to extrapolate from my previous writing, this story is probably going to be a bit ponderous. All conversations that my characters partake in will be of interest to me; they may not be of interest to you. I am going to do my utmost to follow the advice of my writing partners and keep them tied closely to the narrative, but I reserve the right to go off on whimsical tangents.

Sixth, also extrapolating from my previous writing, this story will be reference filled. I will not always spell these references out for you, dear reader, as I fear it would slow down the story, but if you enjoy a particular phrase or sentence feel free to ask about the origin in comments.

Seventh, at the bottom of every post will be the word count of the chapter, and the current word count. This is for my benefit and yours, so we can keep track together.

Eighth, thanks for reading!

John
